MNIT Sports Tournament

MNIT Day 0:

It took us a long and tiresome journey 6 hour to reach the Pink City of India from our little township of Pilani. After listening to about almost 1/4th of the songs on my Ipod (mind u, I have a 5 gb collection), I found the bus turning into the gateway of the much known institute, MNIT. An hour later, after all the captains had registered their teams at the registration desk, all us Bitsians, realized where we were, and suddenly hit the epitome of craziness.

Girls were not allowed outside their hostels beyond 8:30pm. So if we were to go to our allotted rooms, we could not come out. Then began a well planned strategy. Girls of each team put their luggage with the guys of their teams(in their rooms), and then set off to explore civilization.

An hour and an extra two kgs later, we, the Badminton team was walking back on the deserted streets of Jaipur, near the known Gaurav Towers. It was 11pm. ‘GT’ as it was called was at a throw away distance from the Institute and was their most popular hangout area. It has almost everything. You name it and its there. Mc Ds, Pizza Hut, Dominos, CCD, Mocha, Shopper’s Stop, Planet M. Chomping away the cheese bursts in front of us, each of us were staring at the TV screen at the outlet, clearly confirming our lack of TV exposure. We then split a bill of around 1400 amongst 8 of us and then split ourselves!

‘Gay’ and ‘merry’ is how I would describe our little lot walking back. The meaning is of course, what it meant ten years ago. That is, until we were stopped by a group of policemen and Institute authorities. They looked like they were in flames at the sight of girls outside their hostels at a time like 11:15pm! After a decent amount of yelling, they finally let the girls walk back towards the hostels, and sent the boys to go, get back our luggage from their hostels and send it to the girl’s hostel.

MNIT Day 1:

We woke up the following morning, with certain aspirations and a hope to win something (Silver- because we knew Gold was a tough bet since VNIT Nagpur had national level players and were no match for us. Next year we’ll try.) at this Sports Fest.

The first round was against GEC Bharathpur (Govt Engg Coll). It was a sac win without much ado. . We, girls celebrated later by having a light snack at Mc Donald’s, shopping at GT, followed by a coffee at CCD. I was then properly lootofyed by one and all from the badminton team in a treat at Pizza Hut at dinner. Two hours of pet-pooja and 9 “Ebony and Ivory”s (the brownie and vanilla ice cream) later, a bill of Rs. 3200 was staring up at us.

I, for the first time in my life, signed a debit card and felt all important. Of course, I dint pay all of it. It was 1000 bucks treat and the rest went dutch.

The guys too got a bye in the tournament so no real action had begun until then. The real fight was to start by Day 2.
